How to prevent onions from making you cry!!
My wife suffers from this and it always breaks my heart seeing her cry on the cutting board.
Try the following tips to prevent this from happening!:
Tip #1: Peel the skin off the onion and let it soak in water while you prep other items for your cooking. After it has been soaking for a while take the onion out, dry it, and cut it as usual
Tip #2: Make sure you are slicing and not smashing your onion with your knife. If your knife is dull as my razor is, you might as well use a bat against the onion. Using a dull blade forces you to apply pressure to the cut which makes the moisture from the onion fly in the air. Use a sharp knife and remember to slice, not push down
Tip #3: If you don’t need the onion to be completely raw, you can warm it up for a FEW seconds (few is the key do not cook your onion!) in the microwave. To do this peel the skin off your onion cut it in half and warm it up in a small bowl in the microwave. A slightly cooked onion will not make you cry as much as a raw onion
